By:
Dwain Celistan

The resume is the hardest working item in your tool kit to secure a new opportunity. In most instances, this document will touch more people than you will speak to and certainly more than you will interview, during your search.
Additionally, the resume, a 2 dimensional document has to represent a person. It has to help the reader understand "why you". The resume has to help separate you from other talented candidates. This is critically important in a competitive marketplace of many solid candidates.

Powerful beginning of a resume

Dwain Celistan

The role of a resume is to provide the reader with a reason to call you. Therefore, all elements of the document need to differentiate you from other candidates. The first meaningful element of the resume is the Summary or Objective statement. In this market, the objective statement is far more powerful.

As an executive recruiter and career acceleration coach, I review hundreds of resumes per month. This is typical, regardless of the economy; professionals use recruiters as conduits to finding their next opportunity.

In the current economy there is a supply demand imbalance that favors hiring organizations. They have also taken a posture of favoring candidates that have the greatest chance of success and lowest risk of failure. The criteria used to screen talent has skewed to three areas: 1) functional recency; 2) industry knowledge; and 3) where possible, geographic proximity.
