Blacks and the White House: Slavery and Service

By:

WASHINGTON (AP) — The first child born at the White House was the grandson of President Thomas Jefferson. The second child born there was his property — the African-American baby of Jefferson's two slaves.

Slaves not only helped build the White House, but also for decades men and women in bondage served America's presidents and first families as butlers, cooks and maids.

The wins followed Republicans' reconquest of another House seat earlier this fall that had been lost to Democrats.

By:
Nigel Duara, Associated Press Writer

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius said Tuesday that a belief among some voters that Democrat Barack Obama is different from them is hindering his campaign for president.

Asked at a brown-bag lunch at the local library why the campaign is neck-and-neck, Sebelius said "code language" raising doubts about Obama is invalid because his life experience "has a lot more to do with me and my family."

'Cosby' Equals Obama Election? Cosby Mulls It Over

By:
Lynn Elber, AP Television Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) - When Bill Cosby entered the polling booth in his neighborhood last week, he carried with him photographs of his late parents and Jimmy, the kid brother who died in childhood.

"I pulled out the pictures, pulled the curtain shut. And I said, 'You guys are gonna vote.' And they did, on one piece of paper," Cosby said.

He couldn't resist delivering a punch line for fellow voters in Shelburne Falls, Mass. — "I yelled out, 'How do you spell plumber?'" — even as he exulted in casting his ballot for the first African-American president.

Over coffee Tuesday during a rare morning off from her NBC sitcom, "30 Rock," Fey noted that "SNL" will be on live this Saturday, as well as airing a 9:30 p.m. EDT Thursday edition, but as to whether she will take part in either broadcast, "I haven't heard." 'Tis the Season for Tricking Voters

By:
Deborah Hastings, AP National Writer

In the hours before Election Day, as inevitable as winter, comes an onslaught of dirty tricks — confusing e-mails, disturbing phone calls and insinuating fliers left on doorsteps during the night.

The intent, almost always, is to keep folks from voting or to confuse them, usually through intimidation or misinformation. But in this presidential race, in which a black man leads most polls, some of the deceit has a decidedly racist bent.
