A river is one of the most powerful forces on Earth. It is a sculptor of valleys, a creator of landscapes and a flourisher of civilizations. While no two rivers are the same, they all have something in common-all are reflections of smaller bodies of water collectively becoming one. Once connected these smaller bodies form a powerful current, an unstoppable, unyielding and destined force, steadfast in its desire to become part of a larger body.

For these reasons the river has carried a particular resonance in the African-American community. The waters of the river have redemptive and spiritual powers, as evidenced through African-American baptismal rites. The famous Negro spiritual, ‘Wade in the Water’ was originally sung to encourage runaway slaves to walk in the water, instead of on land, in order to avoid dogs and trackers on their journey north.

In more recent times, the concept of a mighty river or a mighty stream, was one of the metaphorical backdrops of the civil rights movement. Frequently used by Dr. Martin Luther King who was paraphrasing from the Book of Amos, ‘a mighty river’ or ‘a mighty stream’ was intended to speak to the inevitability and righteousness of the civil rights movement. The power of the concept remains evident today through continued and frequent references to ‘a mighty river’ in popular media.
